Justin, Get the TSM and make sure your shifter linkage is adjusted correctly. The procedure is in the TSM. With the sticking in first AND the grinding in reverse, it sounds (no pun intended) like your shifter linkage needs adjustment. I think there were two brands of linkage used in 62 (Can't remember the names.) so it's important that you use the correct procedure.
