Fred,
I know you have access to lots of parts info, including late price
lists and such. I have a question about diverter valves (Group
4.558) for the six. Is there any practical difference between the
early one, P/N 3223634, and the late one, P/N 3230816? They're
getting hard to find, but I have found a couple sources for the early
type. My July '81 parts price list shows the early one as
non-returnable, but still available at that point. Do you have any
information that shows that they can be used interchangeably?
For your files: There is a two port thermal vacuum switch mounted to
the side of the air cleaner on 1980 sixes. My 1980 Pacer has three
of them. The AMC number is 3235329, but the part came from Ford,
with D5DF-9E862-A marked on it. This can be replaced by Motorcraft
P/N CX-1387.
The car I'm working on at the moment is the 1980 Pacer wagon I picked
up in July. It's a December 1979 car, so it is among the last Pacers
off the line. The engine build date is Nov 12, 1979. It was first
sold by Bottrell's in Manistee, MI in Sept 1980. I corresponded with
Mr. Bob Bottrell, whom I found selling AMC literature on eBay. He
remembers the car; it was the last Pacer they sold, and the last in
the Michigan zone. The car has about 50k miles on it, and is fairly
well optioned. It's not perfect, but it's in good shape, and almost
completely unmolested under the hood. When I bought it, it still had
the AMC belts on it, which I replaced. The lower radiator hose is
aftermarket, but the upper is original, though about an inch shorter
than when I got it. It split on the way home. I just noticed today
that it has the original plug wires as well.
