Re: Collector car insurance

I've got a standard liability, drive any time I like policy with State Farm. They allow a "stated value" on the car also. I have everything except collision on it. Since it's a drive all the time car (and policy) it's $500 or so a year. But I do get to state a value. But there's a misconception on "stated" or "agreed" value policies. They are good as long as the car is repairable. Basically all they provide you with is an arguing point as to whether the car is really totaled or not. If the car is unquestionably totaled or not repairable, by law in most states the insurance company only has to pay CURRENT MARKET VALUE. The ins. cos. say this is to "protect them" from people stating high values on a vehicle that isn't worth that much. I find this position absolute idiocy. They CHARGE by the stated/agreed value! They should be REQUIRED to pay by it -- by law. It's simple enough to not agree to insure a car for an amount from the start, isn't it? No, we're all stupid, greedy peo!
ple, not the "innocent" insurance company that we all want to take advantage of. Insurance companys ALWAYS assume you're trying to rake them over the coals. I had to fight the last time my Rambler was totaled, and all I wanted was FAIR treatment. I'd have settled for less than they finally determined they owed me (their call) IF they'd have just made what I'd have considered a reasonably fair offer to begin with.

Haggerty flat out says they won't cover any damages if I use the car for work. I don't, but I also can't get much enjoyment out of the car by not being allowed to bring it to work on pretty days! That is part of the reason I have posted the convertible up for sale. I can't find tiem to drive the one that runs, why bother spending months or years building another! That is time I could be driving the one that runs!
