Matt,
Removing the gas tank isn't usually that bad of a job unless you just
topped your tank off before having to remove it (not changing having to
drop it a couple of days before Christmas in your parents driveway also
helps). One plus on American's/Rambler's is that the bolt for the strap
stays out of the normal grunge path so they tend not to get too terribly rusty.
Use plenty of penetrating oil on the bolt for the retaining strap. There's
not much room to work but supporting the car by the body so the axle drops
down helps. I also recommend only undoing the nut enough so that you can
get the bolt out of the place it hooks into. Once you move the nut down
about an inch and a half, you should be able to push up on the bolt and
unhook it's head. Once it's unhooked, disconnect the wiring and fuel line
and drop the tank down.
Once everything's apart, clamp the very bottom of the fuel tank strap bolt
in a vice, run the nut back down it some and then run a die down the thread
before trying to take the nut off of the bolt. Take the nut off the bolt
and then run the die down the bolt again. If the bolt is in good shape, you
can run a tap through it to clean the threads. When everything is cleaned
up, you should be able to run the nut all the way down the bolt with little
effort. There are tap and die sets that are sold specifically for cleaning
up threads but thread cutting sets will work as well as long as you're
careful not to cross-thread the existing fasteners.

I have somemore if you want to see them. I'm sure you all have seen the
car in some magazines so I just wanted to show you that I do use the car
for fun and let people at cruise nights see that the Big Three isn't all
there was out there, most really like that.
I also just want to say Hi to you all and I see a few names of people
here that I have gotten to meet.
I got a new gas tank for my SC and I thought I should ask, is there
anything I should know about changing it before I mess with it,things are
never as easy as they look.
Thanks,
Matt
