Re: SBC into 68' American

In a nutshell, getting a factory V-8 crossmember or modifying a six cylinder cross member, and using 65 or so Chevy truck cushions with a single stud on the bottom. You will also have to change to a compatible bell or transmission, and modify the trans CM if you switch trannys. Then you'll need a custom driveshaft made. I'm not sure if the speedos turn the same direction or not, or if the ends of the cables will cross over, so you might need a custom speedo cable built or switch to an electronic speedo, or play with converters. Then there's a few wiring changes -- different connectors and locations. I don't have to say this to you Russ, but you have to do all this in a neat and professional appearing way to get any respect or a decent price for the thing. If it looks thrown in no one will like it, hot rodders (who don't care what engine is in there as long as it looks and runs good) or AMC people (who are real critical of "alternate" power -- and rightly so, especially if do!
 ne poorly).

Hot rodders have stuck Chevys in everything, so you can find adapters and adapting parts. Get a Speedway street rod catalog, it will be your friend (www.speedwaymotors.com)! It can be done, you just have to sit down and plan it, then take a hit when you go to sell it. It's harder to find a buyer too, which is more a problem than price it appears. Pros and cons!!

Whats involved in swapping a SBC into a 68' Rambler american ? mostly concerned with mounts and fitment. Thanks
