The only problem I have with this is that I've continued to get these messages after I verified. I got tired of it and created a filter that deletes them so it's no longer a problem for me.

Same here. It's not working and has become a nuisance. It's too invasive a service for a mailing list.

There are real solutions to spam. I see no more than 5 a day. Spam
isn't an issue for me at all, or anyone who uses a real ISP. We
use spamassassin on our mail server. I think Earthlink does too.
You can ask potential ISPs what they use.

You want a quality article, you gotta pay. Luckily it's not much.

This 'white list' method was a nice idea, but it's an evolutionary
dead end.

It's a legitimate e-mail from a spam filter service. What it does is allow mail to go through. If you don't know the guy, ignore it. Basically all his e-mail gets intercepted by this service, which sends a verification message (what you received). If you don't reply your e-mail won't be allowed through the service -- it will be blocked. If you do reply, you're sent to the service's site and asked to enter a code from a graphic, something a spam bot can't do. Enter the code correctly and the service will add your e-mail to his "allowed" list. I've been getting so much junk that I wish I could use a service like this, but it's not an option when running something like this list and AIM. I'd miss to many e-mails from new computer users and those who just don't want to bother with the verification process.
