nutball 196-t5 clutch options [was: Best 4.0 combo]

" If I was to look for a complete 2WD 4.0 and 5 sp trans (or auto - but I prefer manuals), which yr/model would be best?

this made me think about the nutball 5sp swap i noodled up some years
ago that you expressed interest in. i proposed using a mustang 3.8 t5
and fabricating an adapter plate for the original t96 bell, but one
problem remained: the clutch. the 196 flywheel is drilled only for
the little 9 1/8" disc, and we knew only of 10" and larger discs.

well, i should've seen the obvious. amc t150 3sp normally used a 9
1/8" disc...

also, ford falcon sixes... early '60s had a t96 and had a 15/16"
splined disc [sound familiar?], but late '60s used a toploader 3sp
twin to the t150 and a 1 1/16" spline disc. for these little
motors [170 & 200] regular was 8 1/2" but hd was 9 1/8".

third, i just found a slant-six site
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/clutch/sl6-clutches.htm that talks
about a hd 10" pressure plate which fits the small 9 1/8" bolt circle!
this is because the stock flywheel has a small 122-tooth ring gear and
no room for a larger pattern.

some poking at partsamerica yeilds a 9 1/8" pressure plate that is
shared with amc [verifying the bolt pattern] and a spx c1525 10" used
with sixes and 273 v8s '63-'87 and still available new for ~$113.
team this with a t150 hd 10" disc...
