Re: oil pickup tube installer

Russ,

If you're doing a bunch of press fit oil pickup tubes, this type of tool would be nice to have but for the occasional pickup, you can get by with an open end wrench or a punch to tap them in (both wrong tools require a hammer).

If you can slide a press fit pickup tube into the oil pump it was designed for and seat it all the way, something is wrong either with the tube or the pump (or you're pretty strong). If you're just shoving it in as far as you can and letting it be, you're asking for trouble. It's also a good idea to tack weld the pickup tube to the oil pump (particularly in extreme situations like off-roading or racing) to keep it from falling off.

If you have a pickup tube that's held in place with a bolt (like the six cylinder pumps), I'm not surprised that you can get it one by hand (all though, I recall having to drive the one in on my 68 American when I rebuilt it's engine). It's a good idea to use a little sealer on the tube where it fits into the pump but that's all you need.

I saw the oil pickup tube install tool on Evil bay and

big city oil pickup tube installation tool or do I do
as I have done in the past. The pick up tube just
pulls out after removing the long bolt, and installs
doing the reverse......Russ
