The "crime" here was that Canadian cars didn't have this problem because of a couple dollar plastic shield Ford installed to prevent the tank from getting punctured in the first place. I remember reading something about this several years ago and Pinto's were not the only cars to have this problem but Ford had deep pockets at the time so...

BTW, there's a spoof of a WWII spy movie (I think it's called Top Secret! or something like that -- it's the one where they end up flinging a cow out of a catapult at a castle) that has a pretty funny scene with a Pinto in it.
