Andrew, I mocked this up about 10 years ago. I could be mistaken on the two upper bolts being the same distance apart. I could have been thinking about drilling the two uppers in the bell? I do believe the mounting bolts worked, but can't swear to it. It's a 1963 American T-96 bell and a 1979 Spirit SR4. Wish I could get to the parts to check now! If AA has them backwards -- 6.32" between the upper holes -- then it might just work. Or I could have measured the distance between the bottom holes and not the top, assuming it was a rectangular pattern??? Like I said, 10 years ago... I agree -- usually looking for a drop in swap. The only "improvement" that is drop-in would be to find a T-14 or T-96/OD, even better if a Twin Stick. None are performance transmissions, though at least the T-14 is fully synchronized.
