Richard, on some of the AMC cars the windshield has to come out to get the dash out. There's a row of screws under the gasket. The 73 TSM that there is a row of screws along the top edge below the windshield, but doesn't say if they are under the rubber. If you can't find them I'd assume they are.
Not on the 01 Hornet/Gremlin/Concord line. Dash removal is very easy, though probably not needed.
You will need a long #1 or #2 phillips to get the half-dozen or so screws along the top of the dash. They thread into the top of the "firewall" (that part behind the cowl has a lovely old-fashioned carriagey name but I can't recall it).
[If you simply tighten these screws, most Hornet/Gremlin/Concord dash squeaks go away.]
One or two body bolts (giant self-tapping jobs), each side of the dash, down low. 1/2" wrench.
One or two of the package shelf brackets braces the dash. 5/16" nut driver.
Steering column support, under the omega-shaped trim (that never fits right on any car I've had). 9/16" socket.
I think that's it, besides cables, wires, etc. I migt have missed a few. The dash will pretty much fall into your lap once you do this. Steering column can stay in place.
Oh yeah, you have to take the speedo cable off the back of the gauge cluster to get the dash board off :-)
(I just did all this on Friday on my parts car. I was yanking the heater/AC box out to get at the fan motor. WHICH OF COURSE I realized I could get out with three simple nuts from inside the engine compartment with no (zero) disassembly, it was smartly designed for replacement/service. D'OH!)
