  As far as I know there is nothing wrong with replacing a damaged door
and leaving the door tag from the new door on. This really has nothing to
do with the original VIN which is on the dash (later cars), under the
hood on (earlier cars) or other places plus the hidden places. And for
sure, there is nothing wrong with replacing your I6 and AT with a 401 and
4spd. and no it is not illegal and the only thing you would have to worry
about is passing emissions (if your area requires emission/safety
testing). But what is wrong is replacing the dash and not putting the
original VIN on it and then trying to pass off a '72 as a '74 for example
or trying to hide a stolen vehicle.
