No flams, no pointing fingers, just FACTS
The swapping of numbers IS ILLEGAL. It is a FEDERAL offense, as well as
state laws. I won't go into all the details ( hell I don't know them
all). If you go to the state and get LEGAL, paper work on a car you have
swapped numbers on, You sign paper work ( you should read some of it),
stating that the vehicle is what it is, You now have committed FRAUD. The
Government may let you get away with defrauding people, BUT when you use
them to do your work, and they find out, YOU ARE SCREWED. Like Jock
pointed out, If you where in an accident, no matter if it was the other
persons fault or not, they find out the car has been tamped with, law
suit, and you will lose. You could be sued by a number of entities,
including YOUR insurance company, because you defrauded them too. Like a
drunk driver, no matter what the situation, no matter who is at fault, if
you are drunk, you are at fault. WHY, you should not have been on the
road, and the accident would not have happened, Same goes with a vehicle
that is illegal on the road. Now I am not saying this does not go on all
the time, What I am saying is it is illegal, do it at your own risk, and
I sure as hell would not brag about it.
Re bodying as talked about before in the context with AMC, is a different
deal. AMC would provide a body, there is paper work on it, and every body
knows about it. Lots of cars are re bodied, and most are not disclosed as
such, and I have not looked it to the legality of it, BUT I do know that
you are supposed to fully disclose the info on a car. Most don;t, to cut
red tap. There are usually LEGAL ways to do it, differs from state to
state.
Just FYI
