I've done the same thing; I like my cars primitive but there are times...!

It's electrically easy -- a buzzer in series with a diode. You
wire it between the headlight switch (lamp side, not battery side)
and the IGNITION terminal.

The diode is wired so that when the headlights are on, it tries to
power the car; it won't, and can't, because not enough current
will flow through the buzzer, but it iwll make noise.

If you're not comfortable making one, I'm fairly sure AMC used a
headlight or key buzzer that is a plain buzzer with a diode
built-in. Just gotta find which one!
