Wouldn't be so bad if the head didn't have to come off the change the lifters!
I successfully changed the lifters on my 232 years back without taking the head off. The engine only had some 20K miles on it, so there was no wear or crud in the top of the lifter bore to jam them. I'm not sure if that happens or not though.
The spring clip that holds the guts of the lifter into the body is just visible on two sides of the dimple that the pushrod sits in.
I made a hook out of steel wire that JUST BARELY picked the edge of the spring clip. I was able to pull them out of the bores with just that.
(When I put the 232 into the Rambler, I ordered a custom cam from Crane, I told them I wanted an "RV" cam but for LPG, if that made any difference. Unfortunately they made a cam with so much overlap I had nearly no idle vacuum, and the LP carb barely worked. I ended up yanking it and installing a stock-replacement cam. Forget where I got that. I did all this with the engine in the car and the head on, around 1994.)
