Well, you REALLY need to pull the pan and find out what's making the noise! Sounds almost like a rod bolt has backed out. If the other one is tight and the engine hasn't been run much you might be lucky and have no crank or rod damage -- YET. The 196 does have a forged crank and forged rods. But you will HAVE to pull the oil pan, and the sooner the less likely much damage will have occured. Check that rod journal for roundness and wear, and you just might be able to get by for a while by changing the single bearing. That is if a loose cap is the problem, and the rod or crank hasn't been damaged. Remote, as the bearing is usually gone by the time noise is made, but you might get lucky. The trans not going into reverse is usually a problem in the valve body. The BW trans has several clip in tubes running across hte valve body. It is quite possible one of these came loose. You'll have to pull the trans pan to find out. While you have the pan off go ahead and pull the valve body and have it cleaned. Be VERY CAREFUL not to loose any small springs or balls when you remove the valve body! The TSM will tell you what will fall out and where it will come from. In spite of towing on a dolly at speeds up to 85mph for 5 hours, she took off in D2 very nicely. I'm going to say that the towing did no damage! However, there are a few issues that I need help with. First, there is no motion in reverse at all. I don't think this is related to the tow. Could this just be a band adjustment? Linkage? Second, there is a noise in the bottom end. I can feel something hitting the inside of the pan and there is a small hole caused by the friction of whatever is flopping around in there. I am confused because the engine seems to run very smooth and does not smoke. The oil is also clean. If this 196 is ready to puke and die, wouldn't it run poorly? > Overall, for $400, I think I did fine. I drove it around the block a few times and it seems pretty tight, no squeaks or rattles and it rolls straight. Any help with these issues will be greatly appreciated! > > Andy Ray > Las Vegas > 64 440h(3) > 68 Javelin SST 343 > 94 Grand Cherokee 5.2 > > > ============================================================= > Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist ============================================================= Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist
