A: The first XJs came out with a carbed 2.5L and 3.55 or 3.73 ratio with 4.10 in the '86 up Comanche and XJ with tow package. The 2.8L often had 3.07 or 3.55 and so did the 4 cyl with 904 auto. They used a 4.11 rear gear though. A 1980 Spirit 2.5L/4spd combo used a 3.08 axle, but I doubt that would give good performance. The American should perform just a bit better than a Cherokee -- my 63 Classic is about the equivalent in weight and frontal area nad performs about like a Cherokee does. So you should be able to get great performance with a 4.11 axle, and should be able to use a 3.73 or something similar and still get good performance and a bit better mileage. The American might work with a 3.08, but I'd go lower. To high a ratio will have negative results on mileage and performance.
