Sounds like the secondary is opening to fast, causing a sudden drop in vacuum. Of course you probably realized that! If the secondary is mechanical then tinkering with the linkage is all you can do that I know of. That's what I've had to do with mechanical secondary 4V carbs anyway -- quite a long time ago! 

As for the vacuum -- where are you getting vacuum for the distributor from now? I know there has been some debate over ported/non-ported vac for the distributor in the past. Since you aren't getting ported vacuum, I'd suggest looking at the timing settings for an older AMC six that didn't use ported vacuum and trying those settings. Get vacuum from as near the source used on the older engine as possible.
