If it starts and runs OK and the starter does not bind you might get by. I would sure take it easy until fixed. I think this is what gets you the proper clearance amd alignment for the starter. It's always preferable to get it right, if possible. If this is a good M12 and works good I don't know of anything that would be better, myself. If it was original with the car, anyway. That is, unless it's for something special for you...race car, etc...
