On Sunday June 18 there?s a driving event in the San Francisco area called the Double 500. It?s a fun, low-pressure road rally; 500 KM in a $500 car. Seems to me to be tailor-made for a no longer wanted AMC. It starts early in Sausalito at 8 am, returning, if possible, in time for lunch and free car show across from Poggio restaurant. Here?s my thoughts and I?ll need some help from a Bay Area AMCer. In the next three weeks I need to find the best possible, running $500 car and I?d prefer an AMC. As I have so many projects going on, with an attendant need for parts (like a 258 for my ?88 Eagle that?s going to require a transplant), A/C components and an disc brakes for any one of my drum-braked AMCs, a late-model Concord or Spirit would be optimum but in reality any small AMC, especially a 64-69 American or Rogue, in good running condition would be great. (If I can?t find a suitable AMC, an 84-88 Fiero might be interesting; there always seem to be a few running cars available cheap. I also love the idea of doing this in some huge station wagon, like a seventies Ford Country Squire.) If a suitable car can be located, such as on eBay or in a local classified, I?ll handle the financial aspects from here in Southern California but will need logistical help in the Bay Area, meaning someone to actually take delivery of the car for me, help get the DMV issues handled, facilitate getting the car properly serviced at my expense and store the car until I arrive. Because of my existing schedule I need to be in Michigan from June 14 to June 23 but I have several free round trip tickets accumulated in all of my travels so my plan will be to fly in to SFO or OAK late on Saturday, June 17 and fly right back to Auburn Hills on the night of the 18th or the morning of the 19th. I will need to store the car in the Bay Area until June 29 although if it turns out that I find a non-AMC car that I have no long-term use for, then I plan to put the car right back up on eBay and hopefully sell it. In that case I would need some help with coordinating the resale. Basically I need two things, first is to locate a suitable car and second, someone who can help with the logistics. I?m hoping that I can turn this in to an off-beat story (I think Car and Driver ran a story on a previous running of the event sometime in the last two years) and maybe find a car that can be either resold quickly or if suited, serve as a donor to get some of my other seven AMCs into better running condition. Certainly whoever helps me in this project would be welcome to be co-driver for the Double 500. In fact I wouldn?t mind having two co-drivers as it would probably simplify my photography issues if I?m able to work an assignment out of this project. So if you live in the Bay Area or Sacramento, please keep your eyes open for the best possible $500 car and if you think that you can help with the logistics as outlined above, please contact me at autotronic@xxxxxxx or call me at 714/981-2725 between 8 AM and 9 PM PDT.
