Right. 2.87 was common as the torque converter would boost engine torque by roughly 2.5:1 (somewhere in the 2:1-3:1 range). A 300 lb/ft engine puts 750 lb/ft through the trans. A stick car doesn't have this benefit so uses a lower geared rear axle.
