for a 290/304, the ford 5.0 t5 is a fairly trivial adaptation. but
even the svt t5 is only rated 330 ft-lbs, so it's a little iffy behind
a 343 or 360 especially in a heavier car. not impossible with a

I was talking about a driver, not a serious performance vehicle. I have seen many high-11 sec. and 12 sec. Mustangs run T-5s for hundreds of drag strip runs and thousands of street miles with good service. I was considering the concentrating on the advantage of the OD, not the high-power durability.

"gm t5 - no points, unless one falls from the sky. but a gm-style
aftermkt t56... i know of one that's been done."

GM T-5 is not much harder to adapt, just a bit more expensive to do. The transmissions are cheaper, though not as prevalent. The adapter-bellhousing-transmission mounting-etc. doesn't seem to be easy, but is, in fact, straight forward and readily available. They do have a more desirable gear spread with their 2.95 first gear over the Ford's 3.35. The T56 is one I did not include in my list, nor the T45. Both are excellent transmissions. In fact, it would seem that a T45 would be easier to adapt than the T56, though not much benefit over the T5.

"another thought - ford toploader with jeep t17x-family gears. i keep
 forgetting which is which, but there's a t176, t177, and t178, and
3.01, 3.52, and 3.82 1st gears, and easily strong enough for a 360
even in a wagoneer. you can also use the h/d toploader 31-spline
mainshaft."

The high numeric first gear TopLoader gear sets are expensive to find and are no stronger than the T5. The case and mainshaft are stronger, but the gears are not.

I had not considered the 42e trans. What does anyone know about it?

Has anyone actually built a power/mileage combination they would like to comment on?
