If you have access to a whole pile of the heads on occasion you can find one with enough core shift that the triangular holes don't hang over the edge of the old blocks. They are close, right at the edge, but a head gasket will hold. I've seen several websites that mention this as possible. I don't know that I'd do it, but I thought I'd throw it out there. I actually had two heads side by side when I was putting my 4.0 together and you could see the difference in them. There was about a full 1/8" of difference in the location of the triangular holes! I placed the one with the most on board shift on an old 232 block and you could just see the edge of the hole in one or two spots. A little more core shift and it would have been completely over the block. Easiest DIY way is to pack the holes with water soluble packing peanuts and epoxy (need 1/16" epoxy, minimum) then let it cure for 24 hours. Next best is to drill the holes out to 3/4" and pop in 3/4" welch plugs (freeze plugs) with a little sealer on the edges. You could thread for flush pipe plugs, but that's goin overboard! Lastly the holes can be welded, but not recommended unless you're a good welder. > >The 4.0L head (and block) is slightly wider than the older counterparts. The 4.0L head gasket blocks these holes, they are to close to the edge ofthe block when the head's on the older block. > >On May 5, 2005 Todd Tomason wrote: > >> Anyone have any good information on adapting a 4.0 cylinder head to a 258?
