You CAN put the axle/springs/panhard rod back together then tie the torque tube up under the car. Then take some rope and tie it near the ends of the axle then up front to something (I put the trans crossmember back in) AND in the back to the bumper or whatever solid points you can find. If you don't, when you get the car moving in one direction and hit the slightest obstacle with a tire, that tire will stop while the car keeps going! At the least this will bend the panhard rod before you get the car stopped (and give you chest pains!). At the worst the rear axle will stop while the car keeps going, bends (or even breaks) the panhard rod, then the springs pop out and the car drops on the axle/ground. The springs aren't likely to fly out from under the car, but it's a possibility that they come out -- fast! -- and cause some considerable pain. I *DON'T THINK* they are compressed enough to break a leg (unlike the front springs!), especially after bouncing off the body and/or g! round, but... You will find the torque tube really isn't hard to work with at all. There is the inconvenience not being able to move the car with the trans or tube out, without a lot more prep work, but that's all. If you pulled the engine it would be a lot more work than I described! Sounds like more trouble than it really is, but I got as detailed as I thought someone who hasn't done it before would need.
