If you look at the specs there ar elots of differences between the Audi assembled and AMC assembled versions. AMC machining specs are sloppy in comparison with the German specs. AMC bought a plant in Indiana specifically for assembling these engines. Main castings were sent from Germany then received final machinging and assembly by AMC. Some items were outsourced from local manufacturers, things like the water pump, charging system, etc. I don't know if AMC cast or outsourced the valve cover. AMC bought licensing rights and were to EVENTUALLY buy the tooling as Audi phased the engine out. AMC never sold enough to purchase the tooling. Turned out to be lucky for Audi as the 924 sold pretty well. So Audi didn't exactly buy the tooling back, the deal just never went fully through. I don't know if any money changed hands when this happened -- AMC may have paid for or made payments toward the tooling already??? Never been able to determine that. AMC really crippled the little engine. They used point ignition and a two stage 2V carb like the old Ford Pinto 2300 four. When questioned why no EFI and electronic ignition by the auto press AMC execs replied that they didn't have experience with that technology and wanted to reduce the chances of problems. I can understand the fuel injection, but the electronic ignition??? I met someone in Atlanta who had a four speed 79 Spirit with the 2.0L. They changed over to a Pertronix Ignitor (electronic ignition) and gained a little power and mileage. They DROVE the thing from Oregon to Florida, then up to Atlanta! It had no power equipment or air. They felt that the care was adequately powered, especially with the electronic ignition. Normally you wouldn't feel a 4-6 hp increase, but when you have barely enough power to begin with it's more noticeable! I saw a Gremlin with a 2.0L and power everything sitting in someone's yard once. I was sort of interested in another AMC at the time, but as soon as I saw the 2.0L four, auto, power brakes (don't recall for sure if there was PS or not, but I think so), and AC I was turned off that particular car! I'd never driven one, but read that they were just adequate in a Gremlin with four speed. I had that little Alliance at the time, I already knew what inadequate power with an automatic was! I think the AC equipped cars had a vacuum operated AC compressor kick-off switch for pulling up hills and passing. I would consider a four speed model, but no way I'd think about an auto equipped, even now! Well, for a collector car only maybe, but definitely not something I intended to drive much!! I forget what the rear axle ratio was, but the one or two years they used them in Concords a 3.58 rear axle was used. I've only seen one Concord that had a 2.0L. It was in a junk yard and the engine w! as gone. I think it was a four speed model, not positive now.
