MORE EBAY INSANITY BOUGHT A RHD 63 CLASSIC IN THE UK

In a moment of weakness, and in an effort to have a Rambler in Europe for the 6 weeks each year I spend across the Atlantic, I bought a RHD ?63 Classic with an indicated 68,000 miles.

Here?s a link to the listing for those who are interested:

The car is going to need some work, most specifically the brakes and both rear quarter panels. I think that I can handle the brakes either working with a UK-based US car specialist but the rear quarter panels are more problematic. These cars may not be as rare as I initially suspected as Pat Foster has just had published an excellent story on export AMCs in the June issue of Collectible Automobile. Seems that not only were RHD cars produced, probably in Canada, but Renualt built cars in Belgium as well, foreshadowing their later involvement and investment in AMC.

If there are any European AMC enthusiasts on the list, especially in the UK, and know of a 63-64 4-door Classic or American with parts and sheet metal to donate, please contact me directly at autotronic@xxxxxxxx I am as always interested in corresponding with overseas AMC owners who have interesting cars and stories. My ?63 Classic will more than likely end up as a project car for my UK US car title Classic American (www.classic-american.com/) and if it gets done in time, I plan to drive it from the UK to Sweden for the big US car meet.

Anyone have information on the Karmann-built 1969 Javelins, especially the location of a car overseas? Pat Foster?s AMC export story renewed my interest in this mostly unknown chapter in AMCs history and it would make an interesting sidebar to a story I?m working on the Chrysler Crossfire.

Certainly Gwen?s great restoration is the target I have in place for this project. I have talked with the seller and it?s a solid running car that has a lot of potential and I always loved the look and timeless style of the ?63 and ?64 Classic and Ambassadors, especially the station wagons. I would have preferred a ?64 American but this seemed too interesting to pass up. Now if I can just find an early IKA Torino for sale in the US (great shots of one in Pat?s new article) I think I?ll have all the AMCs I will ever need although I do have my eye on another one a bit closer to home in Texas.

I?m still looking for a complete disc brake setup for my ?64 American so if anyone knows a suitable donor car in a boneyard, especially here in southern California, please drop me a line.
