Ok day at CAP in Richmond...beat Marc to a sport Jeep steering wheel...

First time in a long time now, I had a chance to
visit CAP auto parts in Richmond today, so I paid my
buck and wandered in. Didn't find but one AMC car, a
red Matador wagon, 74-78 vintage I guess. As per
usual, I found all the V-8 AMC 360 distributors pulled
and the gears missing. I'm REALLY wondering who is
doing that??? I haven't found a single gear yet in my
trips there.
Anyway, back to the wagon...mostly there, the wheels
and rear axles already gone. Most of the interior is
there, not great condition. NOt much to speak of,
unless you need a grill, fender, door, etc. Rust in
the back. I picked up a flip lock lever from the
wagon, but it was in the mini-van next to it, someone
musta taken it off and left it next door. I couldn't
get the passenger side one off, though...stuck tight!
I next wandered over to several jeeps, and one had
a padded 3-spoke Sport wheel! Great...er, hmm, maybe
not so great...all I had with me was a phillips
screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a line wrench
with 1/2 and 9/16 size. So, started scrounging, found
a small , thick metal bracket with slots on the
ground, I attached it to the wheel with long
bolts...tried to beat it off with the jeep
jack...nope! Bad idea..Ok, lesse...look for shorter
bolts and spacers, found a pile in a Dodge van across
from it...got the bracket down on top of the column
stud, and with the line wrench, turned both bolts
alternating until the wheel popped...success! Woohoo!
I stashed the small bracket in a rear pocket, it now
will become my defacto portable "steering wheel
remover" tool from now on. LOL.
Looked thru the yard for some Toyota truck stuff,
nada. Looked at alot of trunk lids for a spoiler for a
project idea, found one I liked on a Ford Probe...but
bent at one spot...only Probe there. Chevy had some,
but not the shape I liked, although the wagons had a
roof spoiler similar to the Gremlins, except attached
to the glass directly...found one with busted glass
out, but no Torx drivers to remove the bolts. Oh well,
make a note for next time. :)
All in all, not a bad day at CAP, wheel only cost
$6.63 or something like that. HOpe it fits a Gremlin,
too. :) Then I'll be really happy! Well, I"m feeling
kinda sick, been getting that way all week. I'll be
resting all day Sunday, for sure. All for now,

Jerry " Gremlin GT " Casper, Virginia
