I switched from a 904 to a 727 in my 360 hornet because i was breaking the
904, 2nd gear band adjustment had to be perfect or it would eat it up, and
I had problems breaking the pump drive on the converter, I pulled the 904
from a 232 parts car and the pump drive was cracked on it. The 727 fixed
all those problems but it did slow the car down, I think I actually had the
998 or 928 variant with the low 1st gear so my low gear went from 3:1 to
2.45:1 which is a huge seat of the pants performance difference. Either one
will hold up to 375 horse but if you abuse the 904(doing 2nd gear donuts on
and off the pavement, bouncing the front end with the throttle) you may
have problems.
If i was buying new I would spring for the adapter plate and get a gm
overdrive unit so I could get some gas mileage and have a low gear for the
track
