That number sounds like it's most likely the part number for the electric choke mechanism itself, not anything to do with the carb. If it's an AMC carb, there should be a metal tag with a number code on it attached to one of the screws. If that tag is lost, you will have to guess at it. On the upside, most carb rebuild kits are generic in nature and contain parts that apply to a multitude of applications, so you'll usually have leftover pieces anyway. The difference largely lies in the size of the jets and in the different calibrations. The rebuild kit should contain a specification sheet that applies to a wide variety of applications--just choose the one that's closest to what you have (i.e. an early-mid 70s 401) and set the specs to that. Of course, once it's on the car and running you can fine tune it to achieve optimal performance. You may have to just go to the parts store and ask for a rebuild kit for an early 70s 4300--they can probably get you one by giving the application (choose a 401 somewhere between 1971-78). Hope this helps. Good luck! Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2005 00:26:02 -0600 Message-ID: <LPBBKPNJCNGELBJINCAEGEHLDLAA.rbade@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> I am trying to identify the carb on the 401 in my '79 Spirit. The carb appears to be a Motorcraft 4300 4-barrel, but all that is stamped or attached to the carb itself is the Motorcraft stamp. On the electric choke, it has the following information: 4FBS 3M218 RB 2KT1-4V I need to identify the carb so I can get a rebuild kit for it. It sits on an Offenhauser Intake that is marked 360. So, I know the person that installed this 401 may have been adding parts from other cars. It also appears that the cover plate and linkage for the carb for the "3rd & 4th" barrel are missing, so I need to get those also. Does anyone have an idea of what the carb might be? Thank you, Ralph '79 AMC Spirit GT 401
