Which is exactly what I did when I installed one on my car. I believe the dealer kits did the same thing, as installing that plastic piece or going through the big rubber grommet (I have seen some installed going through it though) is a big PITA! I think those were reserved for factory installations iwth the dash out. It's real easy to get them in with no dash in place, of course! You have to remember, most of the dealer installed items came with instructions, but most installers took short cuts or did it the way they thought was "better". You know, "if all else fails, read instructions" .
