63-4 American

Dan; you put the 63 and 4 together, they are different
cars completely. AMC did a major rebuild for the 64.
The 65 American came with a 232 available and the 64
is real close to the 65. I have both years. The 64 can
be fitted for the 4.0 by using any 232/258 Xmember but
it is going to be tight. You will have cooling issues,
but that can be addressed easily enough. An AMC 20 can
be put under that 64 if the donor is a Gremlin,
Hornet, etc. The 64 is more "modern" so updating is is
easier.
The 63 can be done, I have seen many done with various
engine-tranny combos. The most common is to drop the
complete car onto an S10 frame. Second more common is
to strip all the inner fenders, flashing, etc and go
with all custom framing. Spendy. Just dropping in a
4.0 onto the 63 frame is tight, to say the least. With
a big enough hammer, anything is possible.
In 66 AMC stretched the car slightly and cured a lot
of problems.....Russ
