You can try adding Toulene to your gas if you want. It may or may not
react as it used to in the old days. We do not have anywhere near the
same fuel formulations in todays gas .
This different fuel we are stuck with also comes into how to tune the
engine in your car. The factory settinngs that were published are not
correct for todays available gas. Many folks will try stone stock set
ups and then have detonation problems. Sometimes even on very low
compression engines.
Any additive that worked in the old days might not react the same today,
the variable is the vast difference in the composition of the fuel then
vs. now.
However, one thing that was done in the old days of lead sleds and
racinh, MOTHBALLS added to fuel picked up power then, and according to
Myth Busters, it still works today. They got an engine and ran it. They
tested with and without. The Mothballs made more power. They used todays
fuel.
They tried sugar in the tank and it ran just fine. They destroyed it
over time by torture and tests.
Amazing what some engines will live thru when others will not even do a
decent job of getting you back and forth. Example: My sons Saturn. First
car, bought new. Saturn serviced by the book, at 62,000 miles, coolent
light stayed on one 80 degree morning. I checked it. Coolent was low.
Added coolent. Checked oil, O.K., but looked a little ''fluffy''. Son
went to work , job is 4 miles away. Comes home, tells me collent light
is back on. I check it, low again. Well, come to find out, CRACKED HEAD.
Great, a car that is babied it's entire life and In fact has never been
futher than 50 miles from home. Never hot rodded as this son is, ''where
is the radio knob?? where does the key go??
