I have no problem with what you're considering. You have the Cobra setup already, and it's a strong motor. I had a AMX with a Chevy 350 engine (I bought it that way so nobody yell at me). It fit fairly easily- just had to weld some new motor mount brackets on the stock AMC crossmember. Lots of AMC motors are now swapping to the Ford T-5 transmissions and some have gone with the T-56 trans using the stock AMC rear so those transmission will work in your 70 AMX. You can easily figure what gears are in your present stock rear, and if it's a posi, I'd consider keeping it and just putting some Moser solid axles in it. Also a couple of arear you can weld it for extra strength. Some early Ford 9" rears are a direct bolt in as are the Mopar B-body 8-3/4 or Dana 60 rears if you want to go that route. Should be real strong once you get it completed. May want to upgrade to the WSC front coilover setup and there's also some lightweight Wilwood front brake upgrades available from a couple of AMC vendors and rear disk swaps for the AMC rear. For all those who hate multi make swaps, remember that hot-rodding all started with gearheads swapping all types of different engines/trans/suspensions/etc. in their favorite cars for better performance. I'm planning on putting a T-56 behind a 390 in my 70 AMX. Sure is better than the old T-10, and I plan to run the car at the track. So am I destroying the car by swapping a better transmission for an antique-I don't think so, and I like running with the new cars. The AMX is less engne and trans, and is originally a 360 go pack 4spd, w/ unknown rear gear. I was wondering if anyone had input on the rear end swap. The engine will fit, but mounts will have to be fabbed as well as a new cross member. Looking for input here, not criticism about putting a Ford in an AMC, I have a car, with no drive train, and a complete wrecked 320hp Cobra with a good one. Thanks in advance and all suggestions(and opinions) are welcome. Steve Avery, are you still here??
