Re: 79 AMX Frame ID behind steering box?

A: Tell the guy you want to ensure there is no rust behind the box (had
someone pull that on me when I was selling my '68 Sport Fury)

Behind the steering box lies the "hidden" VIN number. It consists of the
last 7 digits or so of the car's actual VIN number--enough to ID the engine
size and the sequential serial number. It is assumed that the rest of the
VIN can be recreated based on visual clues on the car, but the sequential
serial number is what is unique to that car and thus is what is duplicated
behind the steering box on the frame rail.

All you have to do is remove the three bolts holding the steering box to the
frame and then just move it out of the way. Once the number has been read,
simply bolt the box back in place

Hey thanks for the info. If I drop the steering box
what will I see? Sorry for my naivete, but I have
never heard that and am anxious to give it a look!
Then again, I don't know that the toothless Wonder
currently in possession of the vehicle will allow me
to do that before I purchase, but we will see!

Have a great week,

Jesse
