You won't find me arguing with you--put that vinyl back on! A nice clean car with a vinyl top can be extremely good looking. I know all the usual arguments: they're high-maintenance, they cause rust, they screw up the lines of the car, they cause rust, etc. But, vinyl tops need little maintenance aside from the occasional treatment with top dressing or 303 protectant or some such. And, most of the cars that are restored to the point of needing a new vinyl top will seldom be exposed to the elements that cause rust. And, a healthy majority of the cars we know and love were available or came equipped with vinyl from the factory. Those people in search of a car restored more or less to factory specifications would need to replace the vinyl to make it correct. I intend to replace the vinyl on my 72 Javelin when I get to that point in the restoration. For a reproduction vinyl top, try contacting Kee Auto Tops at 800-438-5934. They produce a lot of reproduction vinyl tops, and have a variety of grains to choose from. Good luck, John..your Hornet is a sweet car. Is anyone aware of NOS or correct reproduction vinyl top materials for AMCs of 1973 vintage? My color is (was) called 'CN' Cinnamon. All help is appreciated.
