64/5 American grills

There was a thread running around about swapping body
parts between these two years. I have both a 64 440-H
and a 65 440 and there is some difference. I can't
remember who needed the info but here goes. Both
grills will swap but not without some "modifying".
After subjecting the two grills to extensive dyno
pulls at 7000 RPM, wind tunnel tests at the GM proving
grounds and other tests I found out that a 64 grill
has 6 lateral bars and the 65 has 8. This means that
the 64 is a little taller. But they have different top
trim and if you use correct trim they will bolt in.
The 65 grill has three supports (one center and two
others) where the 64 has four supports. It looks like
AMC used the 64 center piece and just drilled three
new sets of holes for the 65 grill, as my 65 has seven
pairs of holes and my 64 only has four.
So you can mount a 64 directly into a 65, but to mount
the 65 grill into the 64 you need to drill three new
pairs of holes.
The head lite buckets all fit.
I am parting out a 64 440 if anyone needs parts. The
grill and windshield is on my 440-H, the wiper motor
is on my 68 post and the nice trim replaced my 64s
so-so trim. If interested email russh97309@xxxxxxxxx
and I will set you up......Russ
