Brien,
If you need a deeper bell for the Lexus convertor, consider the deep
type standard bell that came on the V8 cars. Maybe that would be a
posible fix.
Torqueflites have one of the most shallow torque convertor offsets on
automatics.
One other idea would be to look into one of the special adapter bellsd
that Advanced Adapters does. It looks like plenty of meat is there for
bolt pattern mods. Another good place to seek an adapter/bell would be
J>W> Transmissions. They do a bell that allows the Powerglide or the 400
Turbo to be bolted to it. Maybe one of those would allow mods to fit the
Lexas trans.
My advice is make sure the flexplate stays bolted to the crank, Don't
space it back. If anything needs spacing back[due to adapters] then make
spacers for the convertor. Leaving the flexplate on the crank as
designed allows the starter to stay put and that solves a lot of headaches.
This sort of trans swapping goes on a lot in Drag Racing. I have
swapped many different transmissions into other makes of cars than they
came in. There are plenty of ways to do it, some are expensive, some are
not. Some ways work well for a long time, some fail soon. With mid
plates, and different stuff in Drag cars it always boils down to getting
the correct space between the flexplate and the transmission pump. Too
deep, the pump gets ruined, too shallow and the torque convertor splits
where it engauges the pump.
Good Luck,
