You know, I suppose it would be just as easy to route the exhaust up into the trunk and section off one side -- build a box around the turbo. I doubt you'd lose to much power from having the turbo so far back, maybe 10-15% (compared to mounting close to the engine)?? Could be as much as 20%, maybe even 25%. But you'd get a power boost nonetheless. Say the turbo up front added 70 hp and you got 20% less mounted way in the back. That's still a 56 hp boost. Even with a 25% loss it's still over 50 hp (52 hp). So that coupled with the usual 2-3 mpg boost makes it worthwhile if you don't have much room under the hood. The exhaust pipe going to the turbo could always be insulated as well. I'd do that with a double wall pipe rather than a wrap, should last longer. Of course on a race car it's easy -- just put the turbo in the passenger seat area! That would be close and still have plenty room under the hood.
