Did American Motors make the Hummer at any time in history????
Thanks, This is really important to settle a debate.
Hi Tisha,
I'll forward your question to the AMC mailing list, so the listers can
correct me if I'm wrong or add what they know about the matter.

AM General was a part of American Motors Corporation. Beginning in
1979, Renault got more and more influence on AMC, and as the US
government did not approve involvement of a French state-owned company
in building equipment for the US military, AM General was sold; I think
this was in mid-1983.
<URL:http://www.real4wd.com/content/articles/hist-humvee-02.asp> states
that the first Humvees were delivered in 1985. Typically, it takes
several years to design a new vehicle from the ground up. So, IMHO the
answer is yes and no. AMC was the mother of AM General when the Hummer
was designed. But it now longer owned the company when it started
assembling it in numbers.
Hope this helps,
Wolfgang
