I would do this but I dont have a new valve cover gasket to put on. Plus, i
figured I would probably knock something else off trying to move all the
fuel/vacuum lines when i did it!
Couldnt I do the same thing to find TDC? Putting a dowel in the no1
cylinder and turn the crank till the dowel comes out the furthest, set that
as TDC. (since I think my timing mark is off, i may do this myself tomorrow)

Try this method, it works every time;
Take out all plugs and the valve cover.
With a dowel inserted into #1 piston tap starter, turn
the crank or fan belt, what ever method floats yer
boat. The reason for removing the plugs is to release
all compression, making it easy to turn over. Look for
TDC.
If both valves are closed, indicated by both rokers
being closed, you are at compression stroke. When the
piston is at top dead center check your timing mark.
You should be at TDC there too.
If everything is good so far follow the #1 plug wire
to the cap, your rotor should be poiting to that
terminal.
