A: The piston also pushes some air on exhaust. I either take the valve cover 
off, or just guess, then switch wires 180 if I get backfire.

Oh yeah, it should be close. Depends on how long you CLICK
the starter, it being an imprecise process you should check;
the marks oughta be close though.

It's one of those things... 'do I waste 5 minutes doing a
redundant check, or 45 minutes later re-doing it?'

Though once you get the hang of what's actually going on in
there, tossing new distribs in a randomly-turned motor even
having to rotate the oilpump is no big deal.
