When putting in a distributor, two things have to line up. First, the
worm gears must mesh together, and secondly the oil pump drive (the wide
flat section at the bottom) must line up. So, assuming nothing moves,
the distributor can go in at 0 deg or 180 deg, as this will make the oil
pump drive line up. Once stuff starts moving around, it gets a bit
harder since you'll have to rotate the distributor around a bit to get
it to drop all the way back in. My guess is that one of the gears got
rotated around a little bit and the next time you got both parts to mesh
properly they were 45 deg off from where you started. Nothing to worry
about, once you get it started and straightened out with a timing light.
