AMX 400 info

Mike Geary just sent me an information packet about the AMX 400 that was used in the TV show Banacek (pictures at http://www.mattsoldcars.com/gallery/kenosha2004/amx400.shtml). here's what I know about the car now:

- 1969 AMX customized by George Barris for the TV show Banacek
- Roof chopped 4 1/2 inched
- Windshield slanted back 2 inches
- The wind splits and rear quarters were lengthened (the rear body line was lengthened to extend to the back of the car) and louvers were installed over the rear window, trunk lid, tail lights, and rear pan
- The front of the car has been lengthened 15 inches
- All four wheel wells were radiused
- A body line similar to the rear body line was added from the rear of the front wheel wells to the middle of the doors
- The hood had twin hood scoops added.
- A custom louvered grille was installed
- A custom front roll pan was added
- Paint is Rustic Orange (lower body) and Murano Pearl (upper body) and my pictures don't do the colors justice.
- Interior is a combination of Saddle antique and walnut. The dash was covered in naugahyde.
- Wheels are Cragar SS with Firestone Wide Oval tires
- Total build time was three months

I asked Mike if the side pipes were functional and he indicated that he wants that to be one of the cars mysteries (in other words, he didn't tell me either).

I also was sent a photocopy of an article from the July 1970 issue of Road Test (at least that's what I think the name is) magazine that has several pictures of the car being built. This article claims that the car started out as a 1970 model but Mike's flyer states it's a 1969.

If you want to see it up close and personal, it will be at the Detroit Autorama in the first weekend of March, 2005.
