A: Part way into the year the head was redesigned to a more open chamber (part of AMC's lightening of the motor campaign) and the pistons were redesigned to make up for it. I have an '80 258 which has the lightened crank (12 throws vs 8 vs 6 in later motors with '79/80 in the middle) The bottom end is scrap (vented the side of the block with at least one rod) but the head with the last of the tin covers is available in my forsale stuff. The single barrel carb engines show a different number than the 2 barrel but the block and rods are the same. Does anybody know what was happening? Did they just leave the piston further down in the block with the single barrel engines? Jim Mantle
