Spraying with clear first is an old trick for sealing
the edges where there might be bleed through of the
color.  My only other experience with this is in
painting trim stripes on an airplane.  

The silver was spray can enamel.  Don't know if it was
acrylic or not, but I don't see how that would make
any difference.
