Marty,
There are guys here who have painted many more engines than me, but I have
done it successfully a few times (counting on the fingers of one hand). I
ususally assemble the engine first. Don't sweat the surface rust. When the
engine is complete, wipe it down with a good oil/grease remover like carb
cleaner. Repeat until you're sure you've removed all the grease and oil.
Mask off the machined surfaces, (intake, exhaust ports, etc.) where you
don't want paint. You can enhance the masking accuracy by tapping around
the edges of the masking tape with a small hammer (gently) and peeling off
the excess tape. Paint with several thin coats of the engine paint of your
choice. I would normally skip the primer, but I have done it both ways,
with and without primer. It's up to you.
