Re: automatic transmission question -and- 70 AMC auto tranny

" hi, I have a 1966 american with the 232 and auto trans and the trans
" is shot. I have access to a 64 american parts with the 199 and auto
" trans. will the trans from that car work in mine? both are column
" shift with the d2d1l shift pattern how about the flywheel? thanks,

physically they're a direct swap, though i think they're slightly
different models. my '66 tsm says the 232 normally goes up through
all the gears but the 199 normally starts in 2nd.

nit: that '64 is a 196, not 199, unless it's been changed some time in
its life..

i've got some notes frum australia on beefing the aluminum warners
with some M51 and M65 parts, as they were apparently used on some
biggish [amc-sized at least] cars 'dahn unda'. doesn't sound like
this is your problem though, alas. i'll send them along if you want,
though.

chris and armand - if you haven't already found a tranny shop you
trust, look around for an independent shop that's done business with
the post office - for a long time, preferably. many many postal jeeps
were equipped with these aluminum warners and such a shop will know
them inside and out.

about ten years ago i had my '67 marlin 232's tranny rebuilt by such a
shop locally; it cost me $650, more than the c6 in my '67 lincoln, but
when they told me they not only knew what i was talking about but had
the parts on the shelf, that's all i had to hear.
