I've been thinking about the same thing. The engine has dogleg heads on it 
but given the way the rest of it was put together, I doubt if it has been 
converted to different bolts. They must have used the old bolts. Anyone 
have the 70 model head casting numbers handy? Changing over to the 401 
cank will require a different flywheel, right? I'd like to use a lakewood 
bell behind it so I need one of those with the earlier bolt pattern, or an 
adapter to use the later.

The 70 and newer dogleg heads breathe better, use 1/2 inch head bolts and 
are much more plentiful.
70 and early 71 360, 390 and 401 heads are touted as the best.
The 343 block could be drilled and tapped for the 1/2 inch headbolts.
Not sure how that works with intake manifolds.
or, after market aluminum heads??
