A very interesting article dealing with the Project IV cars:

A Cavalier (long before Chevy used the name) that featured a built-in roll
bar, wrap-around rear safety lights that flash alternate warning signals in
green, yellow and red. The identical fenders and quarter panels were
interchangeable and took two sets of dies to produce rather than four; the
hood and trunk lid also interchanged and obviously took one set of dies to
produce; and the four doors only took two sets of dies. Front and rear
bumpers interchanged. AMC was obviously interested in reducing production
costs back in '66 with style in this vehicles' design in mind.
The Vixen also had some very interesting features incorporated into its
design. The roof had canted vents on the rear portion and the rear window
was recessed and concave to make it invisible from both inside and outside
the car.
The AMX, which sported a "Ramble-seat" and is activated by a push button,
leather seats, and a concealed built in roll bar that allowed for very thin
windshield pillars.
Finally, there was the AMX II. This one had concealed windshield wipers and
headlights, safety tail lights (red, yellow and green), and doors that
automatically locked when the engine was started.
AMC was not only interested in production costs, but was very much into
implementing new safety equipment as well.
The article also mentions the Vignale AMX. Anyone know what that one is all
about?
