I ran into the same issue when I was ready to install a new mini-starter in 
my '69 Javelin with Hedman headers.  Here's how I worked out the removal of 
the old (stock) starter:

The mini-starter went in easily with headers in place.  I assume in your 
case you'll need to get a stock starter back in, so that will be a problem 
also?
